European Championships - Eindhoven, NED

Before I begin with my post about European Champs, I’d like to welcome you to my new website and I ask all of you to be patient as there may be some changes in the future… OK, so now I’ve done that, let’s move on!!!

So the European Championships are finally here again, but this time it’s a long course 50 meter pool, and in Eindhoven! I’ve never been to the Netherlands, so I didn’t really know what to expect, except to see a lot of liberal/free-spirited looking Americans here for the “coffee”. A couple of things that really caught my attention in Eindhoven were the cleanliness of the city, the exceptional height of Dutch people, and the friendliness of its people. Given that I’m as tall as I am, I really feel kind of average in that department! But… as you all might have expected, I’m not here to tour the country, I’m here to do what I do best…

Competition starts on Tuesday, March 18th, and I will be racing in the 50 and 100 butterfly, and the 100 freestyle. My schedule is going to be the following:
-    50 Butterfly Qualifications (Mar. 18th Morning)
-    50 Butterfly Semi-Final (Mar. 18th Evening)
-    50 Butterfly Final (Mar. 19th Evening)
-    100 Freestyle Qualifications (Mar. 21st Morning)
-    100 Butterfly Qualifications (Mar. 22nd Morning)
-    100 Butterfly Semi-Final (Mar. 22nd Evening)
-    100 Butterfly Final (Mar. 23rd Evening)
This schedule shows the races I’m planning on being in, and as you can tell, I only plan on racing the 100 freestyle once just to see where I am. Its more important for me to be fast in the butterfly events since those are the races I need to learn from as I prepare for the Olympics.

I’m not entirely sure what to expect of myself while I’m here. A part of me feels that I’m going to be great, but the other part of me knows that I’m not ready to race… Yet I’m here, and I’m feeling pretty good. Swimming is kind of funny like that sometimes though, because what you feel the day before or the hour before your race isn’t ever the same as you feel the minute or second before you step up onto that starting block. Although, on the other hand,  this competition might not even be nearly as fast as it should be given that the top swimmers have already qualified for the Olympics more or less, which would mean that we should be doing this meet while “in training”. Who knows, but we’ll see!

I do plan on following up each day that I race with my thoughts on how things went, and hopefully posting new photos as the meet goes on. I know there isn’t anything there yet, but there will be!
